Craters of the village of Secinaro

Thursday, December 19, 2013

Secinaro is a small village which became famous for its meteor crater, where now is a natural lake. It has been recently argued, though, that the crater was due to human or wildlife's excavations. Scientists still continue to investigate.

Description

Secinaro's craters Secinaro's inhabitants are 450 approximately; it is surrounded by mountains (the highest is the Sirente, also known as the 'Dolomiti of Abruzzo'). Responsibility

The Municipality of Secinaro tel +39 0864 - 79302

Role

At present the cultural value is little known. As a matter of fact, no hotels are present in the village. However, recent studies on local craters raise interests for a possible meteorite collision in Secirano, which happened millions of years ago. Nowadays, the importance of this cultural value is only local as information about the craters has not been disseminated properly. Local importance

Potential usability

The development potential of the village is low at the moment, unfortunately. Furthermore, the village is unfortunately characterised by depopulation but people who live in Secinaro are very friendly and open to tourists. Therefore, the cultural value of Secinaro village could be improved by disseminating information about its craters. Tourists interested in science and landscape could therefore be interested in the village.
