The Church of Saint Nicola from Molina Aterno has valuable baroque and renaissence altars inside; one is particularly interesting as it was made from the ruins of an ancient marble balustrade of XVII century. Because of the earthquake which stroke Abruzzo, the Church today is still unaccessible.



Description

Church of Saint Nicholas, located in Molina Aterno In 1559 the Church of Saint Nicholas from Bari was consecrated. In 1631 the large steeple was erected at the back of the church. The church has one nave with transept. The façade has a valuable decorated portal of the Renaissance period. A fresco is well preserved inside, in a lunette on the right handside. Inside there are also baroque and renaissence altars, among which one is particularly interesting as it was made from the ruins of an ancient marble balustrade of XVII century. Besde the alter, are two chapels which were built in XIX century. Because of the recent earthquake which stroke the city, the church at the moment is not accessible.

Role

The Church was and is used for Sunday services mainly. Nowadays, it is an active parish, where every year people celebrate the feast of Saint Nicholas through a procession. Local importance

Potential usability

The development potential of the church is based on the activities of its parish and on the involvement of the faithful, but most of all, it is related to government funds in order to restore it and to make it accessible to the public. In this way, the church could be attended again by people and visited by tourists which could appreciate its baroque and renaissance traits.
