Description
The church of Saint Mary of Peace, the town parish. Inside Fontecchio village, tourists can find the beautiful Piazza del Popolo, where they can also admire the splendid façade of the Church of Saint Mary of Peace. The church was erected in XI century, as a sign of the peace between two adjacent fighting villages. It was heavily restored over the years and its present structure dates back to XIX century. Nowadays it has a baroque style. Its façade was ultimated in 1823, as written on the front door. Inside, there are two stone-decorated holy water stoups and a wooden tabernacle of XVIII century with images of angels in the upper altar. Inside there is a canvas painted by Domenico Betti in 1896 which represents the Holy Family. The church has two chappels; one is dedicated to Saint Antony from Padua with an altar with a canvas painted with the figure of the Saint. On the corner, there is an important wooden pulpit with a latin writing. On the left handside altar is a canvas which represents Saint Mary of the Rosay. On the same side, is Saint Rocco's chapel with a wooden statue of Jesus Christ which probably dates back to XVI century. The Church has been restored many times in the past and is full of important pieces of art, which makes it very important and valuable.
