In Fagnano Alto is a fortress of III-IV century B.C., which is a typical example of a medieval castle, composed of a fortified village, two towers, a drawbridge and 2 ogival doors.



Description

Castle inside the village of Fagnano Alto. Fagnano Alto's ancient name "Ofanianum",  comes from the name of the hill upon which the village  was erected. Fagnano Alto is in fact a  village located at 665 meters above the sea level. The building work of its castle started approximately in III-IV century B.C.  Several barons owned the castle afterwards.  The castle had a defensive usage against attacks and invasions of enemies coming  from the vally of Aterno or from the mountains. The function was therefore mainly defensive.  Nowdays Fagnano Alto's inhabitants are less than 500. Its fortress is a typical example of a medieval castle, composed of a fortified village, two towers, a drawbridge and 2 ogival doors. From XIX century, the castle was owned by the Municipality of Fagnano Alto. Afterwards, it was abandoned due to the precarious stability. Up to now, no restorations have been carried out.
